Short and sweet this week
Gig list, a Glenn Miller question, and who's playing harp with Wynton?
Glenn Miller, whose plane disappeared over the English Channel in 1944, may be the best-known musical casualty of World War II. We remember him and all the fallen this weekend. If he had survived the war, do you think the trajectory of jazz, in both economic terms and in musical style, would have played out differently? Leave a comment if you’re so inclined! The 8495Jazz editorial staff spent the past week gathering string for future issues, so we’re a little condensed this week. But there are plenty of gigs for you to think about! Enjoy your holiday and remember those who gave the ultimate gift to the nation.
Keep scrolling to the bottom! This week’s video features what most of us would consider an unlikely jazz performance from 2004, but it works!

Happy birthday, Zimmy! We don’t necessarily tie Bob Dylan too closely to jazz, but this version of “It Takes A Lot To Laugh, It Takes A Train To Cry,” off the Highway 61 Revisited album, pairs Bob and Wynton. And tell me it does not swing mightily! Bob turns 85 today.

Huge Glenn Miller fan here! I'm not sure if the trajectory of jazz would have played out differently, but I sure would have liked to see what more Miller had in the musical gas tank to share with fans. A musical treasure we didn't get to experience long enough. My humble two cents.
